"And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him." Surah At-Talaq, 65:3
For over twenty-five years, Masjid Abu Bakr has been a home for Muslims across Sheffield — growing from a single terraced house into a cornerstone of the Tinsley community, and now planning a purpose-built mosque for generations to come.
A small group of dedicated community members converted a terraced house on Ingfield Avenue into a place of prayer and learning. With no funding and boundless determination, the masjid opened its doors to its first congregation.
Growing demand led to the acquisition of a three-floor corner house nearby. The expanded space allowed the madrasah to take in more children and the weekly programmes to serve a wider congregation.
In a historic moment for the community, Masjid Abu Bakr purchased a former Methodist Church on Bawtry Road. The acquisition marked a new chapter — a permanent, dignified home with space to grow.
Planning permission has been granted for a new four-floor purpose-built mosque on the Bawtry Road site. Phase 1 — foundations, steel frame, and structural shell — is underway, with the community rallying around a £1,000,000 target.
